10 and 5 week courses

New term three timetable is now ready! Click here to view.

Beginners

Outcomes: Learn how to play open chords, melodies from tabs, and two scales. The average learner can play five songs by the end of the course and has the skills required to self-learn more.  At the end of the course, they’ll be a chance to take your skills in front of a live audience. In keeping with The Guitar Social way, nearly all people that have taken this course are still meeting, hanging out and most importantly, getting better at guitar.

Resources: Sample Resources can be found here.

Costs: £25 per two-hour session paid upfront in half or one full payment. Bookings now open.

Dates:  See here  for our term three timetable. We can accept people up to three weeks after the start date.

Here’s a video account of what a beginners course looks and sounds like.

Improvers

Outcomes: Although many like to progress onto this from the beginners course some have come straight into this middle tier program without having taken any prior learning with The Guitar Social. Our improvers sessions give the learners a chance to study songs of their choosing in detail with separate levels of difficulty to tackle when playing and practising at home. As ever, the focus is on collaborative playing and playing songs with multiple layers and textures using scales and some inversions mixed with traditional open chord shapes. Learners will also get the chance to tackle the dreaded barre chord shapes.

Key areas of focus include fretboard knowledge, barre chords, chord inversions, scales and improvising, developing rhythm skills, fingerpicking and some light theory.

These are laid back sessions that give the musician a chance to discover their own playing style and develop confidence in a fun space.

Intermediates

A course that gives the guitarist of some experience the chance to get stuck into some deeper musical ideas and learn how to jam.

There are three principal goals within this course; to be able to contribute in jams; increase practical and theoretical knowledge; develop playing confidence.

Areas of study cover contributing lead or rhythm in jams, understanding scales, increasing chord knowledge, improving technique, playing with musical textures, developing aural skills and intensifying practice time.

This course has received particularly strong feedback from people that feel their playing has stagnated, are looking for an excuse to pick up the guitar more often or are struggling to move up a level after a mid-term period of learning.

Advanced

This one of a kind program is for all you players that have grasped barre chords, cracked scales and want to know where to head next.

Our focus is on building a set list of songs some of which re easy and are played for fun, and others that require a more intense study approach.

In between jamming we pause and explore key musical ideas to enable development. For more details, email thomas@theguitarsocial.com

Joy of the Jam

Our fabulous joy of the Jam sessions are for people that can play and change chords in open and barre forms and are looking to get with some other people for lively jams. There is less emphasis on learning theory in these sessions and more time spent on building a set list. The sessions come in five week blocks. Perfect for the Rock Star in waiting.

  3. Hi Thomas,

I would like to ask when the next beginners course will start?
Considering holidays are soon upon us I was hoping for anything in the beginning of Jan so as not to miss lessons.

    Many thanks,
