Course overview
In this course you’ll be taking the leap from that territory where the beginner lives to the exciting and formative grounds of intermediary playing. As ever, you’ll be doing this through songs, some selected by Thomas, and many more suggested by you.
Level and pre-existing skills
This is an improver level course. This means that you can play open chords and are comfortable changing between them. You will have played some songs, you can read tabs and are comfortable with chord boxes.
Learning Outcomes
- Our learning takes us wherever the song leads us, but core learning outcomes include
- Barre chords in E and A forms
- Major and minor pentatonic scale and how to use them in improvised lead work during our weekly free form jams
- Three riffs from our riff bank
- Two short solos, these will be applied live, in class.
- Five common rhythms
- Note names on the fretboard
- Use of power chords across pop, punk and post punk
Mini modules
We’ll be doing a mini folk module, introducing finger picking, exploring classic folk music along with contemporary pieces
What songs and genres
The improvers course sits across pop, rock, folk and indie genres. We are in the process of selecting songs for the new course but if you have any suggestions, please do email them through.
Electric or acoustic?
Bring whichever you prefer playing and feel the most comfortable with. Electric players are expected to bring their own amps
Course includes
