This is an improver level plus program. This means that you'll be okay with barré chords, you can read tab, have a grasp on some scales and are prepared to put in the practice to make sure that we sound stronger and stronger as the weeks go by. 

Course overview 


Part One: The Indie Record Labels of the 80's and 90's

In this course we’ll be focusing on the output of three key independent record labels: Creation Records and Rough Trade in the UK, and Matador Records in America.

These labels were responsible for putting out music by artists such as Oasis, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Pavement, Guided by Voices and Yo La Tengo, amongst many others.

We’ll be learning how to play the songs, as well as some of the great riffs, solos and guitar parts that made this music so instantly recognisable. Each week we’ll take a few more songs apart, get our hands around the guitar parts and then go away and practise them.

And when we come back the following week, we’ll be a little more confident, a little more indie and, most importantly, insufferably full of 90's swagger.

We’ll also take a small amount of time to look at the people behind these labels, the artists they championed and some of the often completely outrageous cultural moments that grew out of this music.

Because these records weren’t just songs. They created scenes, communities, fashions, arguments, friendships, feuds and much to the spectators joy, complete chaos.

So alongside learning the guitar parts, we’ll look at the stories behind the music and the people who made it happen. No previous knowledge of indie history is required. You just need a guitar, a willingness to practise and a love of the music.

Part Two: Indie Guitar — The Early 2000s

In Part Two we’re moving into the early 2000s, looking at the explosion of indie guitar music in both the UK and America.

We’ll be focusing on the output of some of the key independent labels of the period, including Domino Records in the UK and Matador Records and Merge Records in America.

Domino is particularly interesting because it went from being a small independent label championing unusual and often American underground music to becoming one of the most important labels of the decade, releasing music by Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys at exactly the moment indie guitar exploded into the mainstream.

Alongside those bands, we’ll be looking at artists such as The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Libertines, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Hives, Interpol, Bloc Party, The Cribs, The Futureheads and TV on the Radio, amongst others.

As with Part One, we’ll be learning the songs, riffs, chord progressions and solos, getting to grips with what made the guitar playing of this period so distinctive.

But we’ll also spend a little time looking at the labels, the people behind them and the cultural explosion surrounding the music — from the New York garage-rock revival to the rise of British guitar bands, the NME generation, the internet and the increasingly ridiculous race to discover the next big thing.

We'll learn the songs, understand where they came from, and leave each week with a little more playing confidence, a few more riffs under our fingers and some of that care free spirit that came hand in hand with this incredible period of guitar music.
