Level: Multi-level (Improver to Upper Intermediate)
After the success of our first Women’s Guitar Class in Spring, we’re offering another term! This welcoming and supportive course is designed for women (cis and trans) and non-binary who want to develop their playing in a relaxed, encouraging environment.
The class is multi-level, so whether you’re just stepping into the improvers stage or already playing at an upper intermediate level, you’ll find resources and guidance that meet you where you are—and help you grow from there.
We’ll explore a range of skills to strengthen your playing and give you the confidence to tackle a wider variety of songs, including:
-
Feeling confident reading chord sheets for songs - focusing on 7th, suse2/4 and diminished chords.
-
Approaching and breaking down barre chords
-
Working with triads and chord shapes across the neck
-
Expanding your strumming patterns for different styles
-
Developing fingerstyle technique
-
Smooth chord transitions and strengthening chord shapes
-
Using capo & transposition to make songs accessible
-
Building confidence in rhythm and timing
-
Combining accompaniment techniques to suit different songs
By the end of the 8 weeks, you’ll have built up your confidence with trickier chord types, developed a toolkit of strumming and fingerstyle patterns, and gained the skills to break down almost any chord you encounter—so you can approach new songs with ease.
Alongside technical development, we’ll also spend time looking at the contributions of women in music, and discuss the unique challenges female and non-binary guitarists may disproportionately face—from representation to performance confidence, or finding a comfortable playing style even if your guitar may not have been made with a women’s body in mind.
Join us this term to take your playing up a notch, whatever stage you’re at.
What songs and genres
This course sits across pop, rock, folk and indie genres. We are in the process of selecting songs but if you have any suggestions, please do email them through.
Electric or acoustic?
You should always bring whatever you have the most playing. Electric players are expected to bring their own amps and leads.
